Medical careers are high in demand, and if you’re thinking about working in the health-care industry but you are not sure which route to take, consider a career in physical therapy.

Physical therapy, or physiotherapy, involves the use of physical methods (such as exercise, massage, and manipulation) to assess, diagnose, and treat disabilities, injuries, and certain debilitating diseases. Particular medical careers and occupations within the field of physical therapy include physical therapists and physical therapy assistants.

Physical therapists, in particular, work closely with patients and perform tasks that help to restore certain bodily functions, relieve pain, improve their mobility and flexibility, and help to regain physical strength.

Physical therapy presents rewards and challenges that are similar to those of other medical careers, but some are unique. As a physical therapist, you would experience the awesome reward of helping a patient in need. You be able to see daily the fruit of your work. Specifically, you could perhaps experience the joy of helping a severely injured athlete learn how to walk again, and eventually compete again.

As well, you would experience the daily challenge of assessing patients’ needs and progress, performing tests, making diagnoses, and coming up with what you would deem to be suitable treatment plans. Physical therapy can also be physically demanding and exhausting.

Physical therapists often work on certain floors in hospitals, but can also work in clinics or their own offices. Training to become a physical therapist is quite heavy and usually involves a four-year university degree. If you already have a bachelor of science degree or some significant course work completed in the sciences, you will likely be able to receive some credit.

Physical therapy is not for everyone considering medical careers, but it certainly is the health-care profession of choice for many individuals.
